SUMMARY: The Karpis Cronies were a three-piece band from South-West Sydney. Drawing their name from Alvin Karpis, a notorious gangster from 1930s America, the Karpis Cronies played many shows over their 12 month lifespan before calling it a day.

SHOWS:

ORAL HISTORY:
MATTHEW: Our drummer's nickname was 'Bags in the Bags'. It existed before the band. He was stoned once and trying to explain something and he said 'You've got to put the bags... in the bags, you know?' and it stuck. Quite stupid.
Matthew Ritchie (Bass), Noise Levels correspondence, 2024

MATTHEW: I met Mat Reilly at a mutual friend's New Year's Eve party. He knew Bags in the Bags and we met up in Milperra for a jam a couple weeks later. We all weren't working.
Matthew Ritchie (Bass), Noise Levels correspondence, 2024

MAT: Nirvana and NOFX were my main influences. Matt Ritchie as and still is very much a metal maniac who didn't mind a bit of punk."
Mat Reilly (Vocals, Guitar), Noise Levels correspondencd,

MAT: We played our first show at an open mic night at the Collingwood Hotel in Liverpool. Then I met this chick online in the 96.1 (Radio Station) chatroom and she told me about Great Western Bar's Wednesday jam nights.
Mat Reilly (Vocals, Guitar), Noise Levels correspondence, 2024

MAT: The band only lasted around 12 months. We played about 40-50 shows. Recorded a 4 track demo with Ben Pounder and passed a heap around to our peers and fan-pals. We had another homemade demo, War, with 10-12 song on it. That one featured David Hicks on the front cover with an RPG and John Howard in in a jail cell on the back.
Mat Reilly (Vocals, Guitar), Noise Levels correspondence, 2024

BAGS IN THE BAGS: I love being on the scene and playing with such a great crew... until I nearly died from pleurisy and dildo shows. We braved the M4 traffic in peak hour just to play to and with keen crowds and bands every week. Just as well there were $6 jugs!
Bags in the Bags [Chris] (Drums), Noise Levels correspondence, 2024

MATTHEW: Yeah we made Bags in the Bags play when he was sick. I don't remember the dildo shows though. We didn't know he had pneumonia. Think he still pulled some cones.
Matthew Ritchie (Bass), Noise Levels correspondence, 2024

MAT: I think we just let it stop. Went really hard the time we were together. Bags and myself were 19 and Matt Ritchie was 21. Bags and I were massive trashy shit cunts and were always broke, drinking whatever cash we had, and Matt used to drive us everywhere.
Mat Reilly (Vocals, Guitar), Noise Levels correspondence, 2024
