SUMMARY: Retaliate were a hardcore punk band from the Northern Beaches area who played a few shows in 1997 and 1998. The band broke up as various members wanted to focus on different subgenres of punk.

ORAL HISTORY:

WOODY: Retaliate started when I moved back to Sydney after 3 months in Perth. Perth was fucking hot, 55 days in a row of over 35 degrees... back in Sydney I wanted to start a hardcore punk grindcore band but it ended being hardcore punk. Other members wanted a sound like NOFX or Rancid. I wanted short, fast and loud, like power violence and fastcore - like Siege, Infest, Heist, Rupture, Death Sentence, Capitalist, Casualties, Ripcord. Our first gig was a house show - we played 5 songs and then the cops shut us down; too many noise complaints.
